The Conjuring is a classic haunted house film based on the true case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens are called to investigate a remote farmhouse in Rhode Island, where a family has been experiencing increasingly horrific and unexplainable events. You may need to watch a Disney movie after this one if you ever want to sleep again.
4. The Shining
A family takes a job as the winter caretakers of an isolated hotel. As the hotel becomes snowed in, the father’s mental state deteriorates and supernatural forces begin to torment his family, including his psychic son. The Shining is one of Stephen King’s finest novels turned into film. It’s a wild ride of psychological horror that tops everyone’s list. If you’ve never seen it, watch it this weekend.
5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
A group of friends encounter a family of deranged cannibals in rural Texas. Released in the 1970s, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is considered one of the first and most influential in the genre of slasher movies. Also, the movie is the first introduction to everybody’s favorite haunted house character, Leatherface.
6. The Ring
A journalist investigates a cursed videotape that causes anyone who watches it to die seven days later. As she digs deeper into the curse, she enters a race against time to save her own life. A solidly horrifying film from the early 2000s, The Ring should be a must-see on your horror film watch list.
7. Halloween
Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to kill again. Halloween is an iconic slasher movie, and a major influence in the way slasher films are made today. Michael Myers has become a favorite haunted house character, and remains as one of the most notorious slasher movie villains of all time.
8. Sinister
A true-crime writer moves into a new house with his family, only to discover disturbing home videos that reveal gruesome murders dating back to the 1960s. As he investigates the dark history behind the videos, he becomes trapped in a horrifying mystery that threatens his family. Sinister is full of terrifyingly diabolical twists and we highly recommend it.
9. Insidious
A family moves into a new home and soon realize that their son has fallen into a mysterious coma. As they try to make him well, they discover that evil supernatural forces are involved. What do you do when it isn’t the house that is haunted? Insidious might leave you feeling extra spooked, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
10. Paranormal Activity
After moving into their new home, a couple document an increasing pattern of disturbing and haunting events. Some say Paranormal Activity is the scariest movie out there, because it looks like it could happen to any one of us. We don’t recommend sleeping with the lights off after watching this one.
